Custom UHV Compatible Widebody Linear Stage

AML’s latest custom stage project has just been completed. This blog post will showcase the stage and detail AML’s approach to designing and building custom mechanisms.

Centred load capacity: 60 kg
Travel: 80 mm
Resolution per step: 5 μm
Fitted with absolute encoder

 

This enquiry began as a set of specifications from the user. This comprised of travel, resolution, vacuum environment, and load requirements. Based on the load dimensions and mass, it was concluded that a full custom stage was required, rather than modifying a standard AML linear stage.

The user required that the stage's linear bearings coordinated with the dimensions of the load, and AML worked to ensure that the design could support this. To drive the 60 kg load, thrust bearings were incorporated on the leadscrew and AML’s D42.1 UHV stepper motor was selected for a higher torque output. The carriage features a custom mounting pattern selected by the user.

An absolute encoder is incorporated into the design per the customer’s requirement for closed-loop control. AML’s SMD4-E stepper motor drive can interface with absolute encoders. Learn more about controlling encoders with the SMD4-E by clicking here.
